I have software icons in my system tray that I don't want
there. I'm not even sure how some of it got installed. I
want to remove this software because I suspect it's
causing some problems. The programs don't show up when I
go to Add and Remove Software. Specifically it's a "Modem
on Hold" progam and a Quicktime viewer (or something).

How can I get this unwanted garbage from my system.

Start regedit,
Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
and HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
Delete the entries there.
