I've installed Norton SystemWorks 2004 Pro, and that thing loads a lot
of services that try to connect to the whole world. It's worse than a
mail worm!

In particular, it keeps running msmsgs in a svchost tree and pesters
the firewall sending packets to port 1900 and trying to listen to the
same port.

I don't even want to hear the name of MSN Messenger. I don't need it,
I disabled it, but SystemWorks keeps loading it.
Hey, is that normal? What is it supposed to do with Messenger?

Thanks,
TheLuke

I used to have norton system works to. But it was such a pain in the butt i
got rid of it.
Its only loading msn messenger because you have it installed on your system
and also its because you have msn messenger on startup at windows.

The svchost.exe is the process name for all outgoing net connections. I have
about four or five copies running at the same time which is normal.
im not sure about your firewall as i don't now what you have.

if you can not find msn messenger to uninstall it another way is to disable
it from startup.
Go to start> run> msconfig. and click the startup tab and disable
msnmsgr.exe from loading up at windows.

Don't know about SystemWork 2004, but all other versions I've used
definitely needed a custom install.
Yes, check for virus defs and program updates on a schedule.
Yes, scan for viruses.
No, don't do damn near anything else automatically.

Hi:
I've been using 'SystemWorks 2004' since the fall of 2003
and am very happy about its performance on my two
identical machines with XP.
In regard to msmsgs, I have NO problem related
to 'systemworks 2004.' Actually, I got rid of this, by
accessing msmgs itself and 'disabled' it.

In my guess, ... it might not be due to 'SystemWorks
2004,' rather than something else, ... like Registry? In
this regard, since I'm NOT expert on this, then I can not
be sure. Someone else could offer a good solution on
this.

It's not in the startup.
If I kill the process, it's reloaded promptly. Awww... >_____<
It's as if Systemworks needs it for some special purpose.

Don't have your version of Systemworks so this is a guess.
Look at the AntiVirus settings. Is NAV scanning MSN Messenger files?
Maybe it's starting MSN Messenger to get some sort of programming
hook on it???
