"System32.exe missing" error on startup

Although I have not noticed any loss in functionality in XP since this problem arose (yet!), I receive an error message on startup stating that the file "System32.exe" cannot be found. I believe the file has been deleted by a virus protection program. Could anyone help as to how I would go about replacing this file

System32.exe is _not_ a valid Windows file, but rather a file name
commonly used for a component of several well-known viruses, worms,
and Trojans.
