Thanks very much for your help.
Your procedure did not work quite as described. But there
is an option F2 for automated recovery but I did not
create the Fd required for this, how can I create this?
My XP is the PRO version purchased about 6 months ago and
fortunately I have dual boot so with 2 HD's so i am able
to run my old WinME system, otherwise I would be totally
lost without any means of communication.
Before following your instructions I ran Trend House call
which revealed 3 viris files starting TROJ these were
delated of course.
My macafee online did not find these virus files.
My best regards
John Phillips

Do a repair installation following these steps.
Set the system in BIOS to boot off CD.
When you see the "Welcome To Setup" screen, you will see the options below
This portion of the Setup program prepares Microsoft
Windows XP to run on your computer:
To setup Windows XP now, press ENTER.
To repair a Windows XP installation using Recovery Console, press R.
To quit Setup without installing Windows XP, press F3.
Press Enter to start the Windows Setup.
Accept the License Agreement and Windows will search for
existing Windows installations.
Select the XP installation you want to repair from the
list and press R to start the repair.
Setup will copy the necessary files to the hard drive and
reboot. Do not press any key to boot from CD when the
message appears. Setup will continue as if it were doing a
clean install, but your applications and settings will
remain intact.
Blaster worm warning: Do not immediately activate over
the internet when asked, enable the XP firewall before
connecting to the internet. You can activate after the
firewall is enabled. Control Panel - Network Connections.
Right click the connection you use, Properties, and there
is a check box on the advanced page.
Reapply updates or service packs applied since initial Windows XP installation.
Please note that a Repair Install from the Original
install XP CD will remove SP1 and SP1 will need to be
reapplied.
Activation
You will most likely be required to reactivate, make sure you do this if requested.

After my 4 week vacation, my system would startup
properly, it keeps coing up with a message that the
previous installation failed, it then does a HD error
check, tries to start again but keeps looping through the
same process.
If I select F8 and safe mode with command prompt[ or any
mode] it still fails to start.
