System won't shut down.

I have a Compaq laptop with an AMD processor and 256Mb of
ram. I did a fresh install from the Compaq restore disks
and everything was fine. When I started to download and
install the updates, the system wouldn't shut down
anymore, it would only reboot. Which update can this be
from?
Any other ideas?
