i have wxp home edition i was wondering if you can delete all the files in
system volume also i want to know how to clean out thetaskbar of past icons?

[ 1 ] If it is the actual "System Volume" then NO you cannot delete all the
files without affecting the operation of your computer. The "System Volume"
is the harddrive partition where the file boot.ini is stored, usually C:\

As well, if it is the "Boot Volume" NO you cannot delete all the files
without affecting the operation of your computer. The "Boot Volume" is the
harddrive partition where the WINDOWS folder is located, usually C:\

If it is *neither* the actual "system" nor "boot" volume (they are usually
one and the same i.e C: Drive) yes, you can delete everything from the
volume, reformat it even, without affecting how Windows itself operates on
the computer. If the pagefile is on the volume already, or Internet
Explorer's cache has been put there, you may have to move these first. Now
is you have program installed there, of course, they will not run if you
remove their files.

[ 2 ] Which part of the Taskbar: Quick Launch .. or the System Tray (the
part which usually has the clock etc.).

The System Volume Information folder can be cleaned up in one
of two ways. The first is to turn off System Restore. To do
that go to Control Panel -> System -> System Restore. If you're
looking to clean up the folder on your C drive, you'll need to
turn off System Restore for all drives. The other method is to
run Disk Cleanup (Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> Disk
Cleanup). Run the utility and click on the More Options tab. In
the System Restore section, hit the Clean up button. This will
remove all but the most recent restore points. If need more
info on System Restore, look here:

Past items from the Taskbar notification area are stored in the
registry here:

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\TrayNotify\PastIconsStream

Current items are stored here:

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\TrayNotify\IconStreams

For an automated solution, download and run the script on line
