Seen lots of complaints for this but no real fixes.

So any bright MVP's that know how to fix it.

Yes I have tried all the help I can find so far..

The Speaker Icon is OK in the Control panel..

But I would like it back in the system tray.

Thanks..

Why don't my Notification Area icons show or why do they
disappear?

I have found that (when using welcome screen) when I log
in too quickly from a reboot, the volume icon disappears
(along with others). If I wait until my floppy drive is
scanned (twice-another annoyance) after a reboot or
startup, then all is fine. Must have something to do with
the time it takes to load all that needs to be loaded.

Hi,

Put the XP CD and use this command

EXPAND -R X:\I386\powrprof.dl_ C:\Windows\System32

with X: the letter of the CD-ROM drive.

Later go to Start > Run and type:
regsvr32 stobject.dll

With Regedit, find in the registry the following keys and enable the
following variables or if needed change their values:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer
NoSaveSettings DWORD type. Content: 0

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
SystemTray Alphanumeric type, content: SysTray.Exe

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Nla
Start DWORD type. Content: 2

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Netman
Start DWORD type. Content: 2

Good luck
