I am using XP Home Edition and my "Disk Cleanup" does not
function. The window appears on the screen
saying "calculating .....scanning ... compressing files"
but nothing happens. How do I restore this tool to
operational status?

Go to Kelly's site:

and scroll down to line 48, right column 'Disk cleanup - Compress old
file freezes.'
