System Tools, Registry Check

I have an up to date version of WinXP Pro installed that
has a number of annoying problems that occured somewhere
along the line. I have posted these in here before. One of
these however relates to an inability to view event
details from the event viewer. Also, there is a
corresponding listing of an error in the applications
event log pertaining to the "Alert Manager Interface."
I've posted questions in here about this previously, but
the only response was to run sfc /scannow, from Doug Knox I
(thanks Doug) which I did, but with no results. My next
move was to run the registry checker from the system tools
menu, however, it won't start and just hangs. Has anyone
seen this problem? Anyone have a suggestion? If none of
this works, I'll have to try to reinstall XP Pro on top of
itself. Are there risks with this that can be prepared for
in advance? Any help is very appreciated.

XP has no native registry checker that is user initiated - if this software
is a leftover from another version of windows (i.e.. Win95, 98 or ME) it
should not be used, as the registry setup between Win9x OS's and NT OS's are
not compatible.
XP does have a registry editor, that can be initiated by Start, Run,
"regedit" and hit OK - but warning, any changes made are immediate and are
not backed up - no undo.
