Hi,
I am running windows xp home. The system has been running fine until
recently. When I boot up the system, sometimes it will just stop but not
turn off. But more often the system will run, then just stop, but not
shutdown. Then I am forced to powerdown. I have fun chkdsk c: /f and the
hard drive has 0 bad sectors. I have run disk defrag and as is well. I have
set the bios to the default setting (just in case it was changed). I am at a
loss as to what is going on when the system will just stop (the screen goes
blank and when I hit the power button it does nothing and I have to hit the
power button for 5 sec for it to shutdown). Any help would be appreciated.
Thank you. -dr. p

Change or upgrade any hardware lately? What's happening is probably a
hardware problem.

Have you checked your System & Application Event logs for any
error(s)? Usually, abnormal actions are logged as errors, such as
a service stopping or other unhandled conditions.
Click Start, Run (type) EventVwr.Msc [Enter]
Click the log type in the left pane and examine the Right pane for
errors shown with a Red Icon. Double-Clicking each entry brings
up the details box with a "Brief" description and a Event ID #.

The other possibility is overheating. PCs draw in air and this causes
dust to accumulate on Fan blades. You might want to take the shell
off the PC, power it on and check that all fans ( Power Supply and
CPU Fan ) are turning. Another option is to download/install a tool
called SpeedFan 4.33. It sits in the system tray and displays the
thermal sensors of your motherboard and some video cards.
Download page for SpeedFan:
