I am using Windows XP Home Edition. In the past few days,
my PC has been automatically shutting down when I use
Internet Explorer 6.0.

The error is being issued by "NT Authority\System". And
the error message reads: "Windows must now restart
because the Remote Procedure Call (RPC) service
terminated unexpectedly."

Can anyone give me pointers? Is this due to a virus? If
not, where within Microsoft should I seek help? Is this
something that can easily be fixed?

Thanks

Lynette

Hi,

It's a new virus called blaster. Information:

http://vil.nai.com/vil/content/v_100499.htm
http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.blaster.worm.html

You need the patch described here to protect against it:

MS03-026: Buffer Overrun in RPC Interface May Allow Code Execution
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=823980

Problem is, you needed to install the patch BEFORE you got infected to avoid
it.
