My computer shuts down by itself when I don't expect it. The lenght of time
it's on varies. I use Roadrunner, but we don't necessarily have to be using
the internet for it just turn itself off. Microsoft suggested at one point
that it may be a driver causing the problem. How do I find out what's wrong
and fix it? Thank you for any help that you can give me.

Shuts down how ? - completely powers itself off, or simply XP
abruptly restarts ? They are different conditions. If it's restarting
then XP is experiencing BSODs (Blue Screen of Death). In that
case an exception event code should appear on the screen. For
you to see that and capture the events you'll need to modify the
Automatic restart capability and allow the BSOD information to
remain on the screen.
To change the default action.
Right Click My Computer, Left Click Properties, when the details
box opens click the Advanced (TAB). In the bottom category
"Startup and Recovery" click Settings and remove the check from
the box titled "Automatically Restart" - then OK....to close all
the boxes.
If it's abrupt Power off - it's likely overheating that can be due
to accumulated dust inside the cabinet or a clogged exhaust port
on a notebook PC.

That is very commonly a sign of a hardware problem. I'd suspect overheating,
or a flaky power supply.

I also have a "sudden shut down" problem whereby my PC "powers off" without
warning and I have to restart as though it's the first use of the day. It is
usually when the PC is "processor intensive", e.g. when authoring/producing a
movie file.
I suspected what R. McCarty seems to confirm that it may be due to the
processor overheating. As everything seems to be relatively dust-free and
fairly unrestricted, do I need to consider a processor and/or computer
upgrade perhaps?
