System Shutdown: what is RPC Service Terminate?

Jason

For the last 2 or three days I get a System Shut Down
window with the dreaded Red x that says my computer is
going to shut down in 60 seconds. It says "system
Shutting Down..blah blah....NT Authority/System" then
another line that says Remote Procedure Call Service
Terminate. I called Dell and my ISP and both seemed to
indicate that someone was logging onto my computer
remotely.

Has anyone seen this before? Is it a virus? and worst
of all do you think that they have done something to my
system or they are just screwing around with me and
shutting down the system?

please send e-mail (it goes to my phone) as I don't know
when I'll have access to this board again.

Thanks

I spoke to a tech at Earthlink who had the same thing
happen to him! It's neither a virus nor a program, but
rather someone using a "back door" into our computers.
Pretty scary stuff.

There is a "bug" on XP that Microspft recently detected.
Go to microsoft.com and "downloads" and it's the #4 most
popular download called "Windows XP Security Patch: Buffer
Overrun in RPC Interface Could Allow Code Execution".
Load it on your computer.

Also, the technician had me go to "start", "all
programs" "startup" and make sure that nothing strange was
there. In my case the "bugs" 1528, 3432 and 736 were
there. He told me to right click and delete them and then
restart the computer and so far, so good (knock on wood).
I hope that this solution helps your problem as well, and
if we can stop these one at a time, it will be worth it.

Good luck,
Amy

Thanks so much for this information Amy, I was having this problem all
afternoon. It's now solved after downloading the RPC fix for windows
XP.
