I recently had to reformat my harddrive due to 2 years of trash buildup and
other assorted stuff. Anyway after doing a clean install of windows XP Home I
now get this anoying popup whenever I shutdown or restart my computer that
states:

" This system is shutting down. Please save any work in progress
and log off. Any unsaved changes will be lost. This shutdown was initiated
by[computer name/My name]

Time before shutdown: 00:00:30

Message:
(THIS AREA IS BLANK)"

Before I reformatted I had found a way to disable this popup for atleast the
past year and a half. For the life of me I can't remember how. If anyone
knows please help this is really anoying.
Thanks for any suggestions.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Reliability\ShutdownReasonUI

that's probably set to 1 (but I've only seen this in server 2003)
set it to 0

Actually this sound more like the symptoms to the Blaster family of worms.
Have you reinstalled all the Windows Updates and Service Packs?

yes, you (Josua Smith) are correct... the ShutdownReasonUI toggle brings
up an extra area below the shutdown/restart/logoff combobox to enter a
log of why you're shutting down. I got confused when I read that
there's a message area, but computers with that toggle set to "1" will
have a "comment:" area that's blank (labeled comment, not message).
Ignore my advice, shelbyclan! :)
