Weird error message in a dialog box appears after being online for about a
minute:- NT Authority System
Remote Procedure Call
System Shutdown

Box has a timer which says closing down system in xx secs.

Any idea what's going on here?

The PC(running XP) works fine when not online. I suspect it may be due to
some kind of network conflict. I had the machine networked with another
PC(on W98) but when I had this shutting down problem I disabled the network
connection and have physically removed the network cable. It still does this
shutdown when I'm online and I am writing this on the other PC W98 which
still seems to work fine. Help appreciated!

I am having the same problem, have you been able to
resolve it yet?

You both have the Blaster Worm.

Start>run shutdown -a [enter] will abort the shutdown.

Removal tool available here;
http://www.symantec.ca/avcenter/venc/data/w32.blaster.worm.removal.tool.html

Please note all the instructions re:activating firewall and getting patch
from Microsoft.
