It was suggested to do a system restore to correct the problem of my computer restarting itself, which started after an update. I'm concerned if I will lose my files since that time if I do a system restore. Or what does it restore? Can someone explain it a little more to me, please? Thank you!

System restore doesn't impact on your data files.
PS business owner; you do have external backups of your data?

Yes, I do. I also have most of my files are on a secure website to enable
remote access when out of the office. So, essentially, I have 3 locations
where I keep my files.

System Restore monitors 'file types'. Usually your personal folders and
files are not touched during a restore. However, if any of the monitored
file types are present in your personal folders, these can be deleted or
replaced with a previous version, depending on what the state of those files
were when the restore point was created.

Example: Files with the extension .EXE are in the Monitored file types list.

You have downloaded a program to your C:\Users\your name\Downloads folder
and this program is an .EXE file. If you run System Restore and go back to a
date before the file was downloaded, that .EXE file will be removed.

See this website for more details.

System Restore restores the operating system (the registry and other
components), and should have no effect on your data files.

However, there are never any guarantees, and something can always go
wrong when doing a system restore or at any other time. Your
protection against that is backup, and you should *always* have your
important data backed up, even if you are not doing a System Restore.

But before you do a System Restore, let me make two more points:

1. If your computer is restarting spontaneously, you are presumably
blue-screening, and you are set to the default of rebooting whenever
that happens. It's a poor default setting and you should change it.
Right-click My Computer, and choose Properties. On the Advanced tab,
click Settings under Startup and Recovery. Under System failure,
uncheck the box "Automatically restart.

Now when the problem occurs again, instead of restarting, you will get
the blue screen with diagnostic information. Post back with those
details for more help.

2. I know you said that the restarting problem began after doing an
update, but you should be aware that such restarting is very often
caused by a hardware program--overheating, RAM issues, or power
problems.
