Will using system restore delete all programs completely that have been added
after the restore date?

hi screwdriver
i recently did a system restore and it completely deletes everything back to
the day u bought it..make sure u save everything. I am not very good at this
computer stuff and managed to have nothing but trouble with my system
since...so just be careful in my opinion....

This all depends on why you are using system restore? have you had a problem
with a driver or something like that, ? For instance if you have a problem
with your display, and use system restore to go back to a date before you had
a problem, then that wouldn't effect any of your programmes, best advice is
to use it but go back to a time not to long ago!
You wont lose any saved data! It is a very good tool to undo problems,
without knowing why you need to use it I can't give definates!

I did a restore or a recover last summer, and one of the options is upgrade
or update instead of new install, I use update or upgrade and did not lose
anything

No, but if those installations put anything into the registry
(and they probably did) you will lose the entries and the
programs won't work.

This is one of the reasons that System Restore is usually a
useful tool only if you go back not more than a week or two.

No, Screwdriver's question was about Windows's System Restore
feature, which has nothing to with your using your OEM
Restore/Recovery CD.

What you did is more properly described to as a "System Recovery"
using the disk (or special partition on the hard drive) that was
supplied with your computer.

What the original posting was talking about was using the System
Restore utility that comes with Windows XP (Start - All Programs -
Accessories - System Tools) and which is used to "turn back the clock"
to a recent previous date and time.

Hope this explains the situation.

Good luck

You are mixing up the Maker's 'Restore system' to ex-factory state, with
the XP System's own System Restore that restores system files and
settings to a restore point made in the past few days. Please get this
straight before giving advice.

A System Restore will remove all the references to a recent program in
the registry, and will also remove some of its files (eg dll ones put in
System 32) but maybe not all. Best to use the proper Add/Remove for the
program first, then use a System Restore (if there is still a point from
before the program was installed) to complete tidying up, and for
example, put file associations back as they were

I've been looking for help getting System Restore in Windows XP Pro., Svc.
Pk. 3 to work successfully and have yet to find a way to get it to work.
I've tried using it in Safe Mode, going back only 1-2 weeks, numerous other
suggestions and none of them works on my system.

I think that System Restore is a really great Idea but that's all it is, an
Idea! It really doesn't work. The best bet, at least for me, is to Backup,
Backup, Backup (get the idea?) I run Backup on System State, Program Files
and Windows before I make any changes on my system, even before allowing the
monthly Microsoft downloads to be installed. I've installed several of them
that caused problems and there was no apparent reason for it.

With that being said, I REALLY WISH that I'd find somebody who knew how to
get System Restore to work. I know my Windows XP Pro, Svc. Pk. 3 keep
offering it but it just never seems to work. I believe that System Restore
creates Restore Points because they seem to get defragmented easily and are
always a part of defragmenting both my C and D drives, but actually getting
System Restore to Restore my C drive just seems to be beyond being an IDEA to
becoming a REALITY!

Don't mean to sound negative, but I can only sound hopeful for so long
before it gets to be redundant and ridiculous!

System Restore and the OS in general would work a lot better, except
for two things.

1) Malware likes to muck about. The very first thing malware wants
to do, is compromise the restore points, so the user will always
be restoring the malware.
2) The antivirus companies know this, so they muck about too.
Between the two of them, they can spoil the user experience.

Either (1) or (2) could be preventing SR from working for you.

The design of System Restore isn't perfect, but if you didn't have
an AV program installed, and there was no such thing as malware, I
bet it would work a lot better.
