I can't get the system restore screen to work properly. I access it thru the
Start Menu by: Programs, Accessories, Systems Tools and then System Restore.
When the screen opens up I click on the "System Restore Settings" and nothing
happens. If you click on the "?" or the "Help" buttons at the top right of
the screen nothing happens either. What could be wrong that it doesn't work?
Am I missing a file or something?

Thanks

Unfortunately, System Restore is a hit-and-miss affair,

I don't at all agree that it's "hit or miss." It is true that
there are occasionally problems with it, but it works far more
often than it doesn't

and not a
substitute to a full system backup.

Of course not. It's not even close to a substitute for full
backup, and it's not intended to be (it doesn't do anything about
backup up user data, for example). It backs up the system only,
and can be a valuable tool for getting you out of trouble by
reverting the system to an earlier date.

My guess would be, and this is conservative, at least 80% hit. Or how
about this Mr. Detail, a mimimum guaranteed hit rate of 80% even with
400 spyware apps running :)

I have no numbers to quote, but I've never seen it fail (although
I know others who have). So I suspect the percentage is much
higher.

Reinstall system restore.

Click Start/Run and type:
"rundll32.exe advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection C:\Windows\Inf\sr.inf"

Have the XP CD handy if it asks for it.
