Restore Points no longer work. That is, when I attempt a
System Restore,I always get a message which says the
system has not been restored to the Restore Point.
However, as a point of information, I recently downloaded
an update to Windows Media Player which automatically
created a Restore Point. That one works! Any
suggestions?
Do I need to re-install XP? Or can I repair XP? What is
the process? Will I lose all files on my hard drive?
Thanks.

Hello!

First look here:-

also:-
Create System Restore Points
:-http://www.billsway.com/notes_public/WinXP_Tweaks/

If that doesn' help:-

With CD in, You could just put this in the RUN command box and hit enter.
rundll32.exe advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection C:\Windows\Inf\sr.inf
Hope this helps.

Thanks for the suggestions. I tried everything at the
Microsoft article with no success and the billsway.com
downloads yielded an anti-virus warning - so I didn't
open them.

Which CD should I be using for the final suggestion?
Thanks again. Jim R

Kelly has a fix at line 278, left, to "restore \ enable system
restore".

However from what I've read the usual cure is to turn off System
Restore at control panel \ system (which erases all points), reboot,
then turn it on again. Is the MediaPlayer point the most recent?

At any rate, you haven't indicated anything necessitating
reinstallation.

Side note: Since as you've seen Restore can fail, it's a very good
idea to have a secondary backup of your registry and system files.
Frequently recommended here is erunt.zip, a 575K freeware utility.
Saved me once, and very easy to use.

I did as you suggested. Turned off System Restore,
rebooted, and turned it back on. It works fine. Thanks
a million!

Glad to hear it. I'd suggest that you check after a couple of days to
be sure System Restore is working all right since you did indicate
that your most recent point was okay.
