My computer froze and when rebooted all the icons on
desktop had changed to ink files which can't activate the
particular program. They don't appear to link to it. I
then tried system restore for which 9 gegs is set aside
on my 80 geg HD but that will not work either.System
Restore is activated to monitor the C drive. I can't
access the month of August let alone any day in
September.I am running out of ideas. Can anybody help?
Could I reinstall windows XP. I did download and install
the SP2 fix approx a month ago.

You're not giving us any information that would help us understand why your
computer froze. What were you doing on the computer when it froze? What
changes were made to your computer before it froze? Did you see any error
messages? What entries are recorded in Event Viewer at the time your
computer freezes? Is it possible that your computer is infected by a virus
or spyware?

If you really don't have any idea what is causing the problem, your only
choice is to backup and reinstall.

My daughter was downloading from the internet at a very
good speed for our 56K modem. Sometimes when this has
occurred for a period the computer will freeze when you
try to activate another program and this happened when I
tried to play a DVD on media player. As a result I
rebooted. It may have been that the icons had changed
prior to my rebooting. I didn't start media player from
the desktop. I have norton antivirus, norton firewall
aswell as windows SP2 security pack with its own firewall
installed, so i would like to think it cannot be a virus
or a hacker that has caused this problem. Why would
system restore not be working?
