I need to use System Restore, but the calendar will not
let me go back further than to the previous month. Is this
correct? I was sure I had gone back further than that on a
previous occasion. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Marilyn;
If you can not go back, the Restore Points for that time are gone and
unavailable for use.
Many things can cause loss of Restore Points, when they are gone, they
are gone and can not be recovered or used.
Some of the things are:
Available space on hard drive
Computer usage
Space you dedicate to System Restore

See this link for more about System Restore:

Restore points are allocated a fixed amount of hard disk space. (The default
is 12% of your hard disk.) When a new restore point would otherwise exceed
the amount of space allocated for restore points, the earliest restore point
is removed. Once a restore point has been removed it is not recoverable.
