Unfortunately, I have discovered that System Restore lets
you down when you really need it. I lost a $400. writing
program and files because it won't restore to the date I
needed it to. I even made my own restore points too.
As usually all these 'features' are drummed up too
heavily when they're not really that great.

Perhaps you do not understand system restore. The purpose of system restore
is to return certain key operating system files, such as the Windows
registry, to an earlier point in time, so as to return the essentials of the
operating system to a known good state. System Restore is not the same as
backing up, and was never advertised as such.

In newsgroup terminology, the above message is abbreviated as follows: RTFM,
which means "read the f****** manual'.

You are misusing system Restore if you are counting on it to act as
back-up for data.
System Restore is designed as the name implies for system data, not
personal data.
See this link for more about System Restore.
Including what will and will not be protected:

You need a regular back-up plan.
No reliable plan keeps the back-up data on the same drive as the main
data.
That would be a recipe for disaster since your hard drive is just a
second away from catastrophic failure.
