I need to restore to an earlier point and I did. Then I figured out that I
wanted to go back further so I 'undid' the restore. Both actions worked
successfully. However, I can no longer restore to any point, even the most
recent. I've checked file properties on all three 'System Volume
Information' folders (I have 2 drives totalling 3 partitions) and enabled
access to the folders in the appropriate folder options menu.

The drive that is a single partition shows Size = 2.15 GB, Size on disk =
2.21 GB and contains 6,093 files, 269 folders. There are 3 attribute
choices: Read-only (filled with a solid green square), Hidden (filled with
a check mark and dimmed), and Archive (with an unchecked box). I have
access to the folder.

The other drive is split into two partitions but the file properties are the
same for both. The drive information is Size = 0 bytes, Size on disk = 0
bytes and contain 0 files and 0 folders. It's interesting to note that all
my checkpoints are still listed in the System Restore program. There are 2
attribute choices: Read-only (filled with a solid green square) and Hidden
(filled with a check mark and dimmed). There is also an 'Advanced'
attributes button on both properties windows. Any attempts to access these
folders or change their attributes or name (per knowledgebase) is met with
an error that states "x:\System Volume Information is not accessible.
Access is denied." Attempting to access these folders in a command window
gets the same response: Access Denied. Attempting to grant permissions
with the 'cacls' command in a command window appears to function
successfully but access remains denied even if I use the /C parameter.

Anybody got any ideas that I haven't tried yet?

Andy,

Make sure you give enough drive space allotted. Right-click My Computer >
Properties > System Restore, adjust your slider under 'Disk space usage'. If
you don't need any old restore points at this point you can go to 'Programs'
Accessories > System Tools > click Disk Cleanup > go into 'More Options' >
under 'System Restore' header click 'Cleanup'. This will delete all previous
points except your last. If neither work reinstall System Restore. To do
that:
* Start > Run > Type c:\windows\inf > OK
* in the INF folder, find sr.inf (sr if extensions are hidden)
* right-click on sr.inf & click 'Install'
* insert the XP disk if asked

Good Luck,
Drew
