I shoult add that I'm running XP SP3 with 2gb ram. No known virus or
malware. And a additional question, will a corrupted restore point
affect previous good restore points. Or would the restore point
program its self have to be corrupted? Sorry about not getting this
all in one post.
Sometimes the system restore points become too old and don't work any more.
But I wonder if your problem is related to the more common problem: namely,
that none of the system restore points (other than ones which you have
created) work at all. If you are using Norton Antivirus, that's caused by a
setting in the antivirus software entitled "Protect my Symantec Product".
The box for that option has to be unchecked for the system restore points to
work.

Thanks for the replies guys. I don't use anything Norton. I've tried
several restore points none worked. The last one I tried was a TEST
restore point that did work. No error message, just the 'can't
restore, nothing was changed' message. The restore point was two weeks
old. I suspect I've picked up something that the MalwareBytes, AVG and
Defender haven't been able to pickup. Thanks
