System restore will not load when I click it in programs, accessories, then
system tools. It does not do anything. How do I get it to load?

If this problem was seen after installing the latest Cumulative Update for
Internet Explorer, then visit this page for a fix:

Hi Bert,

Sorry for intruding into this thread but I had came across the post in my
search for a solution to my problem and chief among them is the System
Restore. Like the poster had highlighted, I had tried too to load System
Restore from System Tools but all I got was a blank white screen. I tried
your suggest method too but the same results was returned.

Incidentally all these actually started because of some ActiveX controls
problems as I noticed that I was able to download the controls from certain
website only. I did a ActiveX diagnostic test with Microsoft online and the
result was submitted for analysis. I was instructed by the attending
technician to make certain changes. However, after the changes the situation
got aggravated as I am now totally unable to download any ActiveX controls
not even from Microsoft.

I was told that probably certain system files were corrupted and has to
repair or replaced them. However, I had misplaced my copy of the XP Disk and
am now at a lost what to do next.

Could you please provide me with your learned advice.

Hi Ramesh,

I tried reinstalling System Restore by following the link below:
How to reinstall System Restore in Windows XP?:
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/repairsr.htm

However, it seems that I am unable to locate the files SR with the extension
INF. I had one but it ended with the extension PNF.

Could you please advice does that mean that System Restore is not installed
for my PC which is a Home Edition Version.

Hi,

Go to My Computer - Tools - Folder Options - View tab.
Clear the Hide extensions for known file types check box.

Now go to Start - Run and paste the following command then press enter.

%Windir%\INF

You should see the SR.INF file.

From that page:

The file may be shown as SR, if you have configured Windows Explorer to hide
known file extensions. To see the file extensions for all file types, then
try this
