A few days ago, System Restore stopped working. It runs
through most of the steps and then reports that it cannot
complete.

I have run the System Restore diagnosis tool and found
the following in the files:

In the SR-Rstrlog.txt file, for RP 185, which was my
Restore attempt:

1524,1490,445999, Delete, Not Found, 0,
C:\Config.Msi\82c8ff.rbf, ,
1525,1491,445998, Create, Optimized, 0,
C:\Config.Msi\82c8ff.rbf, ,
1526,1492,445997, Delete, Not Found, 0,
C:\Config.Msi\82c8ff.rbf, ,
1527,1493,445996, Delete, Not Found, 0,
C:\Config.Msi\82c8fe.rbf, 1528,1494,445995, Create,
Optimized, 0, C:\Config.Msi\82c8fe.rbf, ,
1529,1495,445994, Delete, Not Found, 0,
C:\Config.Msi\82c8fe.rbf, , 1530,1496,445993, Attrib,
Ignored, 3, C:\Config.Msi\82c8fd.rbf, , 1531,1497,445992,
Rename, Fail, 1168, C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 6.0
\Reader\AXEParser.dll, C:\Config.Msi\82c8fd.rbf,
1532, , , START UNDO

The AXEPArser.dll file exists, but I guess there is a
problem with the previous command Attrib on file
82c8fd.rbf

In the SR-ChgLog.LOG file, there are entries for:
82c8fc.rbf - create, delete, rename, attribute change
82c8fd.rbf - create, delete, rename, attribute change
82c8fe.rbf - create, delete, create
82c8ff.rbf - create, delete, create

Can anyone advise me what the problem is, and is there
any way I can fix it so that System Restore works again?

I am using Norton System Works and the Norton Protected
Recycle Bin. I recall an error message when I was
deleting some files from the Recycle Bin, and wonder if
this is related. I cannot recall the exact details of the
message, sorry.

My approach would be to uninstall Norton, then shut off the restore function,
reboot and turn restore back on. This has the effect of clearing out any
corrupt restore record. Run the computer for a month or so and you'll find
that it runs much better faster, less errors without Norton..

Sadly, I would like to recover the existing System
Restore Points, not wipe them all out.

And, why uninstall Norton SystemWorks? (unless it is
known for causing problems with System Restore - perhaps
i should bwe using Goback over DriveImage (after Symantec
has bought Powerquest).

Any advice would be appreciated.
TIA

If the restore record are is corrupt, the ONLY way to correct it is to shut
down system restore and then turn it back on to clear the corruption. If you
don't do this, you will NEVER be able to restore. Norton products cause far
more problems than it prevents. Just follow these Newsgroups.
