I have been using GoBack for many years but after trying to use it with WinXP I can no longer get an adequate amount of restore time because it only let's me allocate 4 Gb of disk space. I am considering usinig System retsore instead but I don't know if it will work as reliably as GoBack. Can anyone verify if System Restore is any good and how far back can you revert?

Restore is not reliable program. If you're using as a
back-up you should consider something else. It's a
marketing gimmick for MS.

90 days is as far back as it can go if you have enough
space.

You might call System Restore, GoBack Lite. System Restore is not a backup
program as implied in another post in this thread. Rather, it is meant to
backup the system state and settings as of a given restore point. GoBack
does that and much more. Both have their drawbacks. If you are infected
with a virus and it's in the restore folder, it's useless.

System Restore is good as far as it goes but it is only meant to be a first
line of defense, it is nowhere near as robust as GoBack and neither should
be used in place of a backup program.

Have you checked the latest version of GoBack to see if there are
improvements that address the issues you might be having?

System Restore only concerns itself with Windows XP system files and
settings. GoBack concerns itself with all files. The drawback of using
GoBack is that it slows your system, and eats up hard drive space. Although
some have had problems with System Restore, I never have. Before I make
changes to my system, like installing software or drivers, I create a
restore point. System Restore only allows a maximum of 12% of hard drive
space for its usage. But, you wouldn't want Restore Points going back more
than a couple of months, because you'll have added software or updates,
which won't be recognized when the old registry is restored. Many just opt
to install a second hard drive, and create an image of their Windows XP hard
drive with Drive Image (seems to be the program of choice) or Norton Ghost.

System restore is not an equivalent but complementary. It aims to
safeguard the system files and settings and other executables so that
you can readily unwind disasters to them without affecting your data.
As such it is very useful - but you need a backup method for things as a
whole, and for data files. For which I would not use GoBack anyway.

See FAQ on SR at

I would suggest checking the settings for each drive at
Control Panel - System - System Restore
and reducing the space allowed to something under 1GB - the 12% of a
drive that it defaults to seems to be too much for its own good on a
modern big drive. That should allow points for up to three weeks, which
is about as far back as is sensible to go anyway

That's not true. My computer is three months old and it has every
single restore point that was ever created.
