A question, what's the difference between using "last known good
configuration" and System Restore? I used the former recently after some
problems, it's now working perfectly and I lost nothing.

"Understanding System Restore"

feature in Windows XP" http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307852/EN-US/

IIRC, the "Last Known Good Configuration feature" doesn't restore the
entire registry. Is's just the hive HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet.
