system restore to initial upgrade?

when using system restore, how do I restore to the initial day of the clean
installation. When attempting SR, I'm only given multiple dates in the last 4
month's, but I would basically like to have a clean re-installtion or
reformat and I no longer have the disc's?

System Restore is a "Short-Term" roll back utility. The points are
chained and dependant on the previous points integrity. While XP
allocates a large disk quota, depending on it beyond 2-3 weeks
isn't really valid. Disk/Partition Imaging is what you want to use
for that type of recovery.

What is the problem causing you to contemplate such drastic action?

How many Restore Points do you have on your computer? If too many that
could cause problems!

How large is your hard disk?

Right click on My Computer and select Properties, System Restore,
Settings. How much disk space is being allocated in terms of MB and %?

Hope this helps.

As other's have said that is not what system restore is for. That is
what your installation CD and /or recovery CD does. SR is there to
cover from software install, driver install or setting change that goes
bad. And SR only saves certain files, not all operating system files
and not data. It only keeps a maximum of 90 days on the restore points,
but in practical terms a couple - three weeks max is what it's good for.

As to your question on how to restore, if your copy is a retail copy,
and if you have proof of purchase contact MS for replacement:
How to Replace Lost, Broken, or Missing Microsoft Software or Hardware

If it's an OEM computer with windows installed by them contact the OEM
for replacement disks.

What is the problem that you feel the need for a clean install?
Especially with XP it isn't necessarily to routinely format and clean
install.

Hi Rock...there is no critical problem on the computer in question, I just
enjoy a fresh start once or twice per year for the speed. I have several
computers and the the one that my 4 children use, I reformat about every 3
months and it solves a lot of issue's, mainly popups that come from Instant
Messanger and I have the disc for that one. Today, I'm speaking of my
computer (kids do not use), that I upgraded about 2 years ago when I was
using the desktop at work. Now that I use it at home and the kids lost my
disc, I just wanted to run as fast as the initial install? Is there a better
way? One issue that I am having, is that I lose the wireless connection after
about 5 minutes of browsing? I have a laptop sitting right next to it and
there is no problem with the router?
Thanks

Hi Gerry...when I reply to another pro (i.e. "Rock") can you see it or do you
get notified also? The C drive is 37GB with 31 unused. Regarding your last
question, it looks like the SR disc space usage is set to the Max at 12%
(4578MB)

I use Outlook Express to read newsgroups , which makes seeing what goes
on in the threads I am interested in. BTW Rock is a profession. I am
only an enthusiastic amateur.

You should be able to run your computer without reinstalling Windows XP.

Your allocation to System Restore is far too much. Having said that you
have plenty of free disk space. I would reduce the setting to 4%.
Right click My Computer, Properties, System Restore, Settings. Next run
Disk CleanUp selecting More Options, System Restore to remove all except
the last Restore Point. Remove Temporary Internet Files at the same
time. Finally run Disk Defragmenter.

What is your RAM memory? When the computer starts running slowly Try
Ctrl+Alt+Delete to bring Task Manager and select the
Performance Tab. What is the Commit Charge? What was the Peak?

Spyware causes significant performance problems. What anti-virus,
spyware and firewall are you using?

Sorry bt, I can't help with the wireless connection issue. I would
suggest you post a new question with all the specifics of your system
and hardware, and a good description of the problem. Also it would be
best if you post that question to the wireless networking group:
news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsoft.public.windows.networking.wireless

With proper maintenance and good safe computing practices there really
is no need to reinstall XP to keep it running in top shape. Mine runs
just as good now as when initially installed. Things to do are defrag,
disk cleanup, regularly running anti malware scans with a variety of
programs in safe mode, use of a software firewall and a router with NAT
- apparently you are using a router. Have a good up to date anti virus
solution and back that up with either another AV program for non real
time system scans or occasionally use several of the online AV scanning
resources as a double check.

Lastly use a drive imaging program to regularly make images of the
drives. Individual partitions and/or files can be restored quickly.
This is especially helpful with kids computers with all the malware
issue. Make an image after the system is clean and running well and
store that one - then restore to it if their system gets hosed (a
technical term for what kids do to systems). Programs that do this are
Norton Ghost, Acronis True Image, Image for Windows and BootitNG.
Images should be saved on an external device / media such as an external
hard drive or DVD.

You cant. IT's time to buy the CD for the OS you want to continue to
use, however.
