every time i run a system restore i am told that the restore was
unsuccessful. i am running windows xp media edition, sp2. any advice?

I had the same problem, and tech support wasn't terribly helpful. I had no restore points at all, and when I put new ones on, they disappeared.
I finally narrowed it down to the settings that were put on my computer which were default from factory......Hibernate was the culpret. I turned it off, turned off restore on partition F which was put on by factory to restore computer to factory settings ............and that did the trick.

Try and free up some spare space on the drive. If you're short of disk space
it can often fail.

Take a look at the troubleshooting tips in MVP Bert Kinney's System Restore
page. Sometimes it can get corrupted. Often times the fix is to turn off
system restore, then turn it back on. This will delete all current restore
points.
