System Restore Not Working Properly

I have XP Home on my home computer. I noticed a few months ago, when I tried
to create a restore point, the the system threw an error and wouldn't
comply.

I forgot about it, and now when I try to install an update to Windows Media
Player 9, I get the following message:

"System Restore is turned off or disabled on this computer." It goes on with
other dire warnings. When I check my system, it indicates that System
Restore is turned ON for all drives. Any idea why it is not working or any
work-around that could get it started working properly again? Maybe some
corrupted file that I can delete?

There may be corrupted data in system Restore.
Turn off/on System Restore to delete corrupted files:
Start/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools/System Restore.
Click System Restore Settings on left side.
Check "Turn off System Restore", click OK, follow prompts and reboot.
This deletes ALL Restore Points including corruption.
Then go back and turn on system Restore and create a Restore Point.
