I had to do a System Restore and it went fine. However, the next time I
turned on the PC it was back to it's 'pre Restore' state. Is there a reason
why my System Restore is lost when I turn the PC off?
Thx

I had this same problem two months ago. You have to put a checkmark in the
"Enable Third-Party Browser Extensions" box. This can be found by opening up
your internet browser and then click on Internet Options and then scroll down
to "Browsing" and put a checkmark in the "Enable Third-Party browser
extensions (requires restart)." Hopefully, this will work. Actually, I
probably forgot 1 step but HP Support helped me with this issue over the
telephone. Good Luck!

What specific items or behaviors tell you that it has reverted to the
"pre Restore" State?

Are you using the System Restore function in Windows to set the
machine back to a date and time in the recent past, or are you using
the computer manufacturer's system recovery disk/partition to put it
back to the "as it left the factory" condition?

Wierd symptoms with Norton Internet Security - all the options were turned
off and the buttons that you click to configure them had gone. So it was
affecting software. The other symptom was that I got 'Page Not Found' on any
page that required a password - such as Hotmail, Paypal, online banking etc.

Cheers Sandy, just had a look and it was already enabled so this must be an
odd one. Oh well, another restore....

NIS works perfectly, on perhaps 75%+ of the PCs it's installed on.
However, if it doesn't work on _your_ PC, best bet is NOT to use it and
remove it ASAP.

The pre restore state is basically when I cannot use Hotmail or any other
website that carries a degree of security with it. Also - the wierd bit -
Norton Internet Security has all it's options set to 'Off' and the buttons
used to configure it have disappeared from the program, making it impossible
to use.

I suspect that your computer is infested with some sort of
virus/spyware/trojan. Some of these can block the actions of
antivirus software once they get onto your computer.

A couple of things to try:

1. On a functioning computer download Stinger (free) from
http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger and save it to a diskette. Boot your
problem computer into Safe Mode and then run Stinger from the diskette
to clean up any of the more common viruses from the machine.

2. After running Stinger reboot the problem computer into "safe mode
with networking" and go to http://housecall.trendmicro.com and run
their full online scanner (free).

Post the results back here if you need further advice or assistance.

Good luck

Nothing to report! I think the only course of action is to remove Norton and
then see what happens.
