I would appreciate any links to info on how to get System Restore working again on Windows XP, that doesn't involve cleaning or removing the existing restore points that I am trying to get bact to.
Thanks
Bob

Thanks, but I'm trying to get back to a previous restore point and purging and rebooting will remove those points I'm trying to get back to. Already have the link saved to try Erunt from one of your previous replies, but I need to find a way to get "restored" to a pevious point first.
Is the replier below you referring to you or me...LOL
Bob

Thanks, Stan. But, won't that erase the restore points that I am trying to get back to?
Bob

He's a jerk........lol, I think he Loves me !!!!! I don't
think anyone can help you there. Once that file is corrupt
it's impossible to do anything with.

You illogical ****wit! How would backing (your registry)
now using ERUNT, help you with the stuff **** you're in
now? All you'll do is backup your problems, and backing up
pour registry is not the solution, as the pillocking
willit keeps posting ad nauseam. If you cannot restore to
a previous point, then you're screwed, and have what you
have now. System Restore does work as a registry restore,
with a few more things also.

Then Ted is correct when he says I'm screwed at this point...which makes me wonder what the hell good is System Restore if it's not going to be there when you need it?
As for Ted...I would love to talk to him face to face and see how bad he really is.
Bob

Thanks for the info, Ted. If you would like to continue this discussion face to face...let me know...I can arrange a meeting pretty quick.

Thanks for your reply, Ken, but do you know of any way that I can get System Restore to working again in order to get back to a previous restore point?
Maximum storage space was set aside for System Restore so this should not be a source of the current problem.

The Dates are chained together. Since Today is Wednesday if
you wanted to backup to Monday you would need "Both" the
Tuesday and Monday points to be valid. If Tuesday's point is
corrupted you can't get back to Monday. So in your situation
you are going to have to find a "Valid" starting "Restore Point"
and go from there. Unfortunately, there is no verify or validate
process to check Restore Points. That is System Restore's
biggest problem, the points may be in place but there is no way
to test them.

I would strongly recommend that you have your important
personal data backed up to CD-R or a separate drive, in case
the process doesn't work. It's not an uncommon thing working
with PC's to go from "Bad" to "Worse".

BobJ,

Do you by any chance use Norton Utilities and use it's Defrag program?

If so, this is the source of you troubles with Restore.

The only way to get Restore working again is to turn it off. reboot, turn it
back on and reboot again. The downside is, doing this you will lose ALL
restore points.

No matter how many times you repeat this, it's still nonsense.
System Restore is certainly not a substitute for a backup, nor
does it solve all problems. But it
is far more than "just a marketing Gimmick for MS." It is a very
useful feature, one that has gotten me and many others out of
trouble many times.

Ditto here as well, wonder if that is the Reverend XP aka Collin under a new
id?

If folks would just read up on system restore, they would have a far better
understanding of what it is intended for.

Aren't you the same person that was complaining about Amethysts posts??

Wow. You are a perfect example of someone who should be banned from posting.

That may in itself be the problem. I am getting the impression that the
default 12% of a drive, at least with the big drives now around, is
simply too much for it to digest. So what I would *try* is reducing the
space allowed in stages, and rebooting and see if it helps. But I am
not confident. When the logs get damaged the only really sound approach
is to disable, reboot, delete the entire content of the System Volume
information folder and start over

And a query (not that it will make getting out of things easier) - do
you run Norton Automatic Live Update? That is becoming implicated I
understand in a lot of troubles with SR in Windows ME - though the
implementation of SR there is very different

Do not have Norton Utilities installed and use XP's defrag program only. Thanks for your reply.
Bob

Thanks, Alex. I'll give it a try without getting my hopes up as it seems I have no other options and nothing to lose at this point.

They both use CDO, they both make the same nonsensical claim, but
unlike the "Reverend" XP, Willit at least quotes the message he's
replying to.

Thanks, Alex. I do not run Norton automatic updates, but I do run Norton antivirus and update regularly via "Live Update." BTW, I'm running XP Pro here if that has any bearing in anything.
