My SR goes through all it's steps. No error messag and
when it restarts it always says that nothing had changed
even when on a particular date and restore point it lists
something that has changed. I don't have it turned off on
any drive. Can I correct this some how?

Hello!
it means you can't go back to your previous restore point.
Okay! try this:-
With CD in, You could just put this in the RUN command box and hit enter.
rundll32.exe advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection C:\Windows\Inf\sr.inf
Hope this helps.

Thank you again. But I can't go back to any restore point.
I don't want to wipe out the points because the reason I'm
trying to do this is because information in a program
suddenly disappeared. I only have the CDs that came with
the computer and it's impossible to know which one to use.
There are 3 System Recovery CD's and one Application, one
Driver. When I put in the string you suggested it came up
with this: The file sr.sys is needed. It also tells me to
put in Windows XP Home Editon and type the path where the
file is located. I have no idea where it's located. Do you
have any more idea? Thank you.

If it has got into trouble, it is probably sensible to clear it out and
let it start clean too. System Restore. Check 'Disable System Restore,
and OK, reboot. Now have Folder Options - View set to show Hidden
files, and *not* Hide Protected mode ones and delete everything in the
System Volume Information folder on each drive

Start SR up again, and I suggest reviewing the settings for each drive.
There is not much point having it enabled on data drives, and on ones
with System or Programs I would reduce the space allotted if more than
say 1GB - I use 500MB, the minimum is 200 which will only handle maybe a
week of points. But the default of 12% of a drive seems too much for
its own good on modern large drives

Also - for SR to make points automatically, it needs Task Scheduler to
be active. So check in Control Panel - Scheduled Tasks, Advanced menu.
If that has a 'Start using' item, click it so it becomes 'Stop Using. .'

This is one of the troubles with such Recovery arrangements provided by
computer makers - they provide for going back to ex-factory state but
rarely for doing repairs. What might do it is to use
Start - Run and run
SFC /SCANNOW

And if that asks for a CD, try having each of the ones supplied in the
drive in advanced (and edit any autorun. If there is a set of usable
files on one of he CDs they will be in a folder called i386, and will
have names ending in _ like, in this case, sr.sy_

But I don't think that System Restore is going to help you anyway. It
is for recovering the state of the system, and to an extent the program
files of applications, but very explicitly does *not* cover data files,
which is what I think from your description is what you are after.
Those need backing up as a separate matter, for which you would need
probably to get a third party program

Hi!
the file is located in folder i386 of XP original CD.
Alternately you may try this:-
Restore/Enable System Restore (Line 278)
