system restore app not working

When I start system restore app from system tools, it
gets an an error which it wants to send off to MS. There
is no user readable message. The technical details say
the failure was assocaited with rstrui and srrstr.dll.
There is a dump in the error report.

I assume that one of the dlls or executables involved is
corrupted somehow. Is there a way to check for
corruption in MS provided binaries? For example, can one
do a checksum on files and check against a known DB?

Any help would be appreciated...

Thanks

Click Start, Run and enter SFC /SCANNOW Have your WIN XP CD in the drive when you start.

Unfortunately, the story is complicated by the fact that
this is an OEM (HP) system that did not come with a CD.
There was a secret partition on the original disk.
However, that disk was going bad and so I am on a new
disk now without the secret partition. I suspect that
the corruption happened during the copy from the old
failing disk to the new.

Is there anything else I can do?

Thanks
Rob

Rob;
Contact HP and get the CD.
It may cost a few $, but far less than the $200 if you need to buy
retail.
