system restore and system information no longer available win xp p

i recently installed sp2 on my computer. i am running win xp pro. since
doing so i can no longer use the search function, system restore and system
infor. what did i do wrong.

help please anybody
 
Several dialog boxes are blank:

•Search Companion
•User Accounts
•Windows Update
•Help and Support
•System Restore

Ignore "Method 2: Edit the registry" in the article Q831430. Method 2 is incorrect.

my problem was very difficult to find, restored multiple times, etc.
%systemroot% wasn't defined in the system level environment variables.
