Well , I have just given up on the system restore function , I will wait for
my next pc to check the function
Here is what I have learned
I have tried all the suggestions in this news group from uninstalling all
Norton products
clean boots , safe boots , every thing else that was suggested
I had even identified the files required for the restart
srclient.dll
sr.sys
rstrui.exe
srsvc.dll
srrstr.dll
I even found the file sr.info
used that with install
and found I had different versions of the files listed above
I copied all the latest dates and versions to the restore directory to
ensure that every
file had the same date file size and version
How I got different ver and dates on these files do not know.
But after all was corrected .
I doubled click on System Restore nothing
I was really amazed with the number of people that are having a problem with
this function
But all the procedures that people say to follow are all basically the same
Even IBM's write up on it.

Hello Robert,

Interesting article at the link you
provided. However, I fail to find
anything relevant to your issue. So I
provided a link with references to the
issue you are having.

http://search.microsoft.com/results.aspx?mkt=en-US&mkt=en-US&q=troubleshooting+system+restore

There is always the repair installation
option, which would correct faulty system
files .

However, you had mentioned that you
tried everything suggested by others..

See what you think of the above.

Hiya Robert,
I'm still watching :-) and am still puzzled over this issue.

I have the option of recovering via my Compaq Recovery Discs, or by
formatting and cloning my original hard drive (which includes operating
system) onto my current "troublesome" drive, but I'm holding fire for the
moment. Like you, I really do want to find the solution (but maybe won't)

DB's link sent me here eventually >>
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/283252/

and this keeps cropping up >>

"System Restore
You do not have sufficient security privileges to restore your system.
Please contact your site administrator, or log out and log in again as an
administrator and try again."

and I know from past posts that you have seen this, as have I.

Microsoft Status for this is _ This is by design _, and I can understand
that they don't easily give the way out of it for us guys, if indeed it is
this that is preventing us from seeing System Restore ( it does make sense
to me). It would defeat the purpose of being a security measure if we were
told how to overcome it. I have followed other guides along the lines of
"Changing Group Policies" but get stuck when I can't find 'gpedit' (which is
something one needs to use evidently) on my system.
Probably just like you, I am the only user of my PC (always have been - so
there has never been a seperate site administrator or anything like it)

I know that I am not qualified to 'fiddle' with my registry, but in
following the links from DB, it lead me to look in the registry and find
this >>

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\Current Version\System
Restore,
and in there find one of the value names 'DisableSR' with a Data Value of -
0x00000000(0), and another - 'Restore Status' with a Data Value of -
0x00000001(1)

and I just wonder if these two are as they should be,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

keep trying :-)

hello bob,

I can appreciate your determination with
finding the bug in your system.

Unfortunately, i havent made system restore a project
to research because most issues with it
can be simply resolved with a repair install or
configuration via control panel. In most cases
if the repair install doesn't fix it, then there is
a problem with the configuration of the service.

There are softwares that have been known
to consider winxp enhancements as a violation
to the integrity and blocked them.

One example is Norton. It is a superior program.
Unfortunately, it couldn't keep up with the superior
updates for WinXP and thus superior problems
were created. Sort of like clash of the Titans.

In any case to answer your question;
srservice is system restore service, eg sr service.

As for it being a task, well when this service is
launched then it becomes the primary task
for your system and allother tasks running
take a backseat when the system restore
service is creating a checkpoint / file; keeping
in mind that each file/checkpoint contains
crucial system file information for their respective
partition and kept in those partitions. SR does not copy
regular files like doc, pics, etc..

Some third party softwares refer to this
as snap shots of the o.s. So you
might view the check points as
snap shots of your system and program
files taken at that moment of time when
you intiated the task of the srservice.

I am glad you posed these questions to me
and hope that my response helps you a bit
more. Let me know if you have any others.

ps: you might want to google srservice
for more details.....

_db here again is my problem
Hi, and welcome to AumHa Forums.

As for System Restore, let's take a look at Event Viewer for any System Restore logs that may have been created recently that may help us diagnose the problem.

Go to Start - Run and type eventvwr.msc and press enter.
Click on System in the left pane.
Click the gray title "Source" at the top of the source name column in the right pane to sort by source name, look for "sr" and "srservice".
Double click on each of these events, then click on the button below the two arrows in the upper right corner. This will copy the event information to the clipboard. Paste the information for each of the two event here. There's no need to post duplicate Event ID's.

How do I use the Event Viewer to search for System Restore logs?

I did not find SR , all I found was srservice

here was the answer , Thanks to -db and some of his research..
Error "System Restore Was Unable To Start Due To A Missing Framedyn.dll".
a.. Copy the framedyn.dll file from the \windows\system32\wbem directory to the \windows\system32 directory.
b.. Thanks to all but being in this business for all my years

There is always the repair installation
option, which would correct faulty system
files .

However, you had mentioned that you
tried everything suggested by others..

See what you think of the above.

Well , I have just given up on the system restore function , I will wait
for
my next pc to check the function
Here is what I have learned
I have tried all the suggestions in this news group from uninstalling all
Norton products
clean boots , safe boots , every thing else that was suggested
I had even identified the files required for the restart
srclient.dll
sr.sys
rstrui.exe
srsvc.dll
srrstr.dll
I even found the file sr.info
used that with install
and found I had different versions of the files listed above
I copied all the latest dates and versions to the restore directory to
ensure that every
file had the same date file size and version
How I got different ver and dates on these files do not know.
But after all was corrected .
I doubled click on System Restore nothing
I was really amazed with the number of people that are having a problem
with
this function
But all the procedures that people say to follow are all basically the
same
Even IBM's write up on it.

you're welcome.

And the answer was , you will never believe it ,
File framedyn.dll has to copied into windows/system 32..
here was the answer , Thanks to -db and some of his research..
Error "System Restore Was Unable To Start Due To A Missing Framedyn.dll".
a.. Copy the framedyn.dll file from the \windows\system32\wbem directory to the \windows\system32 directory.
b.. Thanks to all but being in this business for all my years
c.. There is always an answer ,, just keep pushing,,
