In trying to restore Windows XP home edition, I am asked
for an administrator password? Any idea what that may
be? Thanks

Are you trying to use System Restore or the Recovery Console. If you are
trying to use System Restore, it would only ask for an administrator
password if one had previously been set. Are you trying to accomplish this
on your own system?

Since it appears you didn't set a password but are receiving the message you
describe, I'm going to assume you actually are trying to get into recovery
console which will ask for a password, leave the password blank and press
enter. It's asking for the password to the system's hidden admin account to
which most users don't to set a password.

Michael -

I'm running into the same difficulty in getting into the
Recovery Console on my WinXP HE system. I've tried your
suggestion to simply hit enter, but it doesn't work. It
simply asks me twice more and then says the system needs
to be restarted.

I tried the password I would have used for the
administrator but no luck. I've also tried every single
password I've ever used and none of them work.

My problem is that when ever Win boots i get an error
message saying "autochck program not found - skipping
AUTOCHECK" and then it restarts the system in an endless
loop. My only hope was using my win cd to repair and save
my data. Any ideas?

Thanks
Joe
