I am trying to do a complete system restore. I do not want to go back to a
restore point, I want to return my computer to the way it was when I took it
out of the box. I was never provided with a Windows XP disk, and I do not how
to do this restore without a Windows XP disk. I have done this before, so I
know it is possible, but I don't know the proper name for this process, or
how to get to it. Thanks

Computer manufacturers who preinstall Windows XP
provide a method to restore the system to its original
factory condition. Contact your particular PC manufacturer
and ask them how this is accomplished using their restore
method. Detailed instructions are usually included with
your User's Guide that shipped with your PC.

If your system came with a restore disc or set of restore discs the
you will have to replace them from the manufacturer of the computer

A lot of manufacturers are going to the imaging proccess to restor
the computer back. or you are asked to burn your own copies of th
restore discs

try looking in the start > programs for the compute
manufacturer's help file......click start ....then "al
programs" and scroll around till you see the manufacture's hel
files or restore files or something of that nature

Or you can just go to the manufacturer's web site and under suppor
for your model look for how to restore your computer

What brand of hardware?

If it's a Hewlett-Packard machine, they create a partition on the main
system disk and call it "restore" and assign it the letter "D:". The only
data on that extra partition is a copy of your original operating system.

You also have the option to copy it ONCE to a set of CD's or DVD's. If you
use CD's, it will take about 10 of them to make the set. If you use DVD's, it
will only use 2. I suggest that you restore Windows using the partition
because it will be faster than copying from a DVD/CD.

When your system is finally working OK after all of the Windows updates are
done, burn the DVD set just in case your hard drive fails. The reason is that
because even though it looks like a seperate disk in your folder, it
PHYSICALLY RESIDES on the same unit that has the C: drive.

So, if the disk drive motor goes out, your pimped...
Hoped that helped.

One should always own/have the CD for the OS they want to run at hand.
Time to buy it.

Plato,
Hewlett-Packard **doesn't** give you a Windows CD with a new system. They
put the Windows sticker on the back of the case and install Windows (and all
of the software bundle they add to it) onto a separate partition on the
system disk, usually logically named "D:\" and labeled as "Restore".

The only way to get a physical CD or DVD for a re-install is to burn them
using the one-time option they allow.
