i have lost most of my reserved system space in disk defrag. when i analyze
it shows a lot less than what used to be there. how do i get it back.

Are you talking about free space? If so, Disk Cleanup and remember that if
you have System Restore on, check how many Restore Points you have.

no i mean the reserved space the is white with the green diagonal lines. i have diskeeper pro and i had about 2 inches of reserved space and now i only have about 1/2 inch.

It would seem that the space allocated to "Unmovable files" has been
consolidated.
The most common file taking up such space is the pagefile and this is what
Diskeeper
Pro has done. This is a feature of many third party defragmenters not
available with the
Disk Defragmenter provided with Windows XP.

Was this the first time you have used Diskeeper Pro?

no i have had it on my pc for about a year. and i never had a problem with
it. i did a boot disk defrag and a check disk and that seemed to be when i
lost my reserved space. i also had to defrag my mft and paging file. it has
said ntfc(i think that was the initials) was dirty. i have that problem
solved but i cant seem to get my reserved space back. my system is working ok
but my icons go to the .exe and then change back to icons when open or close
some programs. i dont know if this is connected. i did have a trojan
downloader that i got rid of.

You can have reserved space for a number of things. The pagefile, MFT
file, System Restore are
examples. Which are we considering?

What was the Trojan and how did you remove it? Perhaps it has come back?

Hope this helps.

May be the page file was fragmented and it is expanded in 1 inch space (because
of the fragmentation) then you fragmented the pagefile and the pagefile is now
in one piece (1/2 inch)

if my pc is working fine i suppose i shouldn't worry! i removed the virus
through either norton or trend microi am not sure. i am not an expert but
like to know what is going on with my pc and depend on this site. i have
gained a lot of knowledge on this site. when ever i have a question this is
where i go. with great results. I am just concerned of future problems
without my system reserve space.

Hi Julia,

The reserved system space in Windows XP is dynamic. That is a change
from Windows 2000, but is for the better. You'll likely find that it
will re-appear and reserve some space in the future as you continue to
use the computer.

Also note that defragmenters can defragment the Master File Table (most
of it) online in XP. There isn't a need to run the bootime defrag for
that file. XP also allows movings file into and out of the reserved
space as part of the defragmention process.

PS: I'm the product manager for Diskeeper.

Thank you your program is great! i have used it for over a year and had no
problems until i used norton. i got rid of the norton firewall and went back
to windows defender firewall and have had no more problems. i still have
their anti spy and anti virus but i can disable it to defrag.

Hi Julia,

Thanks for the kind words.

You should not ever have to disable another program to defrag. Contact
the tech support team at Symantec. That is your best bet -they may have
solutions or bug fixes to offer. Our (Diskeeper) technical staff can
also assist - you can email them as well.
