The system information applet opens with the message:

Can't collect information

and:

Cannot access Windows Management Instrumentation software. Windows
Management files may have been moved orare missing.

Not sure what happened...applet use to work. Tried Kelly's registry
fix...the problem doesn't seem to be the msinfo32.exe file, which
executes. MsInfo32 is looking for other files it cannot seem to find.
There are other files in the subdirectory with msinfo32 and I replaced
them from another system where system information works, but that
didn't help. Also, I installed XP SP2 but that didn't seem to restore
any files and System Information still doesn't work.

What are the Windows Management files? If I know what they are I can
replace them or put them where they belong.

Thanks for the help.

Did all the scans you suggested but no joy. I run McAfee all the time,
and did find some spy ware...but removing it did not fix the problem.

I did find a service called Windows Management Instrumentation but I
could not get it to start. Seems like the whole chain of files may
have a problem. I am at a loss of what to do next. Any other ideas???
