System idle process eating all my CPU memory!!!!! HELP!!!!!

every now and then my computer runs really really slowly,
so i press ctrl alt delete and look things over, and find
that the system idle process is taking anywhere from 99%
to 100% of the cpu. what in the world is going on? i
turned off the auto-indexing of the drives to see if that
speeds things up but its still giving me crap. whats
going on?
 
What part of IDLE don't you understand?

what do you mean? i don't know why my system idle process
should even be on if i'm doing things on the computer. i
want to know whats wrong with it because i know that its
not suppose to be like this, because i can't do anything
with it like this. it took me like 3 minutes just to see
this response, thanks for the quick response btw.

System Idle Process is exactly what it sounds like.
It is the % of processing power you have waiting for something to do,
doing nothing.

If you are having problems, this is not the cause.
Try these:
Run an updated virus scan.
Or Scan for Viruses online:

Run Disk Cleanup checking all boxes except "Compress old files"
Run Defrag.
If you have file sharing software such as Kazaa, disable it.

The "idle" process is always there. Think of it as the sack where any unused
resources go.

That is, if you add up the percentages in the task window, it'll always
equal 100%. If your programs are only using 10% of the CPU time, then the
CPU is idle 90% of the time... so the "idle process" shows as "CPU: 90%". If
you run some CPU-heavy task (like video processing), the "system idle
process" will still be there, but with 0% of the CPU.
 
It's normal at 99% for christs sake. What does IDLE mean?
NOT occupied or IN USE, your fine.
