Windows XP Pro...
Occasionally my system speakers start squaking, static, etc., and the system
hangs. It has done this while using a game CD and also while playing a .WAV
file in Windows Media Player. I suspect I need new audio drivers. The
audio
is VIA'AC97 Audio Controller (WDM). I checked the VIA drivers page and
there are several AC97 drivers pertaining to Southbridge. I can't determine
which
drivers I actually need.

Or are there any other thoughts about my noisy speakers and hanging system?

Does your audio vendor's web site provide "Support"
and/or "Contact us" options? They seem best suited
to answer your question.

Perhaps there is a problem on the motherboard and the "sound system" is
merely amplifying the motherboard electrical noise leading to the
motherboard failure.
