I have made a change in the registry as recommended by a MS Knowledge Base
article. However I continue to get a request for the reinstallation CD. The
system then refuses to recognize the CD and continues to ask for it.

I am trying to use SCANNOW. Does anybody know a solution to this problem?

What article?

If you have XP Home and it asks for your XP Pro CD, see this KB article...

You may be prompted to insert a Windows XP Professional CD when you run the
System File Checker tool in Windows XP Home Edition

I did have that Pro problem but followed a KB article instructions, changed
registry and that one went away. However, the insert Windows XP SP2 CD
message has not responded to a prescribed registry change. I will search for
the article and post the number when I recover it.

The change was in Registry/Windows/CurrentVersion/Setup/ServicePackSourcePath
where Data was changed to %windir%ServicePackFiles

Paste: %windir%\ServicePackFiles into Start | Run and click OK.

Does the folder open?

Then you do not have the folder. And maybe not SP2.

Hello again Wesley,
I (am supposed to) have SP2. Downloaded & installed I thought.
How to check this?
Thanks,

Hiya,

How to tell if SP2 is installed.

Start | Run | Type: winver | Click OK
If it says Service Pack 1, you do not have SP2.
If it says Service Pack 2, you have SP2.

Windows Security Center (wscui.cpl) will exist.
Start | Run | Type: wscui.cpl | Click OK |
Windows Security Center will open if SP2, you'll get an error if not SP2.

Windows XP Service Pack 2 will be listed in Add or Remove Programs, unless
XP was installed with SP2.

$NtServicePackUninstall$ will be in %windir% or C:\WINDOWS (There may be one
of these folders that relates to SP1). $NtServicePackUninstall$ will not
exist if XP was installed with SP2.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion

Value Name: CSDVersion
Data Type: REG_SZ
Value Data: Service Pack #

Service Pack # will be Service Pack 2 if SP2 is installed. Service Pack 1
for SP1. I do not know what you have if no Service Pack is installed.

Again many thanks, Wesley.
Was gone all day Friday and just now checked O.E..

I do have Windows XP Media Center Ver.5.1 (Build 2600.xpxsp.050622-154:
Service Pack 2).

Not sure what all the stuff within the Parentheses mean, but, that's okay.

I was curious if the OP even had a %windir%\ServicePackFiles folder. I do
not have one, but I do not have SP2 either.

You have SP2 and do not have that folder.

So, I cannot see how modifying the registry to point to a non-existent
folder would help anything.

I.e.
1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit in the Open box, and then click OK.
2. Locate the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup
3. In the right pane, right-click ServicePackSourcePath, click Modify, type
%windir%\ServicePackFiles, and then click OK.

Wesley,
"%windir%\ServicePackFiles" are 'not within The primary Drive "C" file
system using
Start\search.

They do not show up with a 'Find' in Regedit.

Phew! Now what?

Thanks for your last reply,
drybones

I think that I figured it out.

If SP1 or SP2 was included when you purchased your XP CD, you will not have
a
%windir%\ServicePackFiles folder. The Service Pack in that case is an
integral part of the Windows installation and cannot be removed. So there
is no need for the folder.

I have SP1, but it was part of the install.

Thanks Wesley for you continued support.
I shall just ignore %windir%\ServicePackFiles folder as Windows seems to be
okay.
