Are you running just plain Norton Antivirus, rather than one of the products
with additional features?
At this point the workaround is to wait until for the compatibility issues
to be resolved. I don't know what will be involved in that or when it might
happen--it's pretty high profile, though, so I would expect both companies
to want to get it taken care of.
Without pointing fingers, I know of only one poster here who has Norton
Systemworks 2005 installed and still sees the system explorers. That poster
mentioned that they don't use all the features of Systemworks, and had
picked and chosen the parts of it to install--so there's room for someone to
try to triage the different parts of the program and see which one is having
this effect. Norton doesn't have a trial of this product, so I've been
unable to try it out myself.
About all I can suggest is to live with it, and retry further builds as they
become available.
Microsoft is aware of this issue and looking at it.
I have the same issue with the system explorers not being
displayed, but I am running systemworks 2004 with only
norton utilities and antivirus installed. I have another
system with same configuration which shows the system
explorers.
Interesting--I haven't seen any issues with just the antivirus portion, in
any year. I don't know about Utilities, but I wouldn't have expected a
conflict there--but I'm not a programmer, and haven't run Norton Utilities
in a long time.
I wouldn't suggest that a specific conflict with NSW 2005 is the only cause
for this appearance--but its the one we see most often here. I don't have
any picture at all about what the issue is--Norton has no trial version of
NSW, so I haven't tried testing it myself.
Have you checked out errors.log in the directory Microsoft Antispyware is
installed in to see if there are any specific file-related errors that might
be repairable--ocx's or DLL's not registered, for example?
