I have followed all of the advice in this newsgroup regarding this issue as
well as the KB articles:
227896
109443
829246

I have cleared the event logs, increased the file limit size, set the
overwrite to "AS NEEDED", changed the status to "Disable" then deleted the
event files, reset to "Automatic" and restarted. I have reinstalled Service
Pack 4. I have tried to overwrite the eventlog.dll file with another known
good file to no avail. I continue to get an error message while the computer
is booting:
84ff: System Event Log Full.

I have scoured the Microsoft webpage, but cannot find the hotfix referenced
in 829246. The link sends me to a contact page with phone numbers and email
addresses. I cannot justify $99 for a hotfix.
Please advise to a course of action. I am up against a wall.
Thanks.

Where does it say $99? Hotfixes have always been and are still free. You
call them up and tell them the article ID, they send you the hotfix.

Thank you very much Dave.
My other question is that the article references Service Pack 3 or later.
Wouldn't this hotfix be included in SP4 and if so why didn't that solve our
problem?
Thanks again.

Not according to the article. The machine must be at SP3 or greater in order
to install the fix.

Thanks to you I have the hotfix in hand.
I extracted the file and found two executable files.
One extracts to a folder: /symbols with two eventlog.dll files.
The other is an installation wizard.
The readme does not indicate where to copy the /symbols/ folder.

Ran the installation wizard, rebooted and am still getting the error message
during boot.

Your advice is highly appreciated. Thanks again.

Can you view any items in the system event log? What happens after you clear
the log?

When I use the Event Viewer I can view the system event log and it does show
typical events of the type: "Information", but not many. When I clear the
log, these items are deleted. I clear the system, security and application
logs and the Event list clears. Then reboot.
The error appears after the SCSI check completes. The error is in red and
is only present for a second or two:

84ff: System Event Log Full

Seems your system BIOS keeps a System Event Log that can hold 3200 entries.
You may need to enter cmos setup to clear it. Or just ignore it.

You nailed it man. I was actually headed in that direction, but my solution
was much more drastic...like pop out the BIOS battery, but a simple change in
the cmos did the trick. Thanks a ton. You rock.

Glad to hear it. Thanks for the feedback.
