My PC is running unstable; it locks up when running some
programs and runs very slow when searching the internet
inspite of the fact that I have high speed internet.

I have tried freeing up space, by removing unwanted files
and programs. I have also downloaded updates (which were
of no help at all) and reinstalled some of my programs.

Recently, I completed a PC scan of my PC using a free
trial of some software I downloaded from the internet. I
learned that I have serval system errors 60% of which I'm
told are critical errors and can cause damage or
performace issues. How do I eliminate these errors? If
possible I want to do so without doing a full
restore/recovery of my system or having to pay some high
dollar price to purhchase software that will fix the
errors. Am I asking for too much? I'm not even sure how
the errors occurred in the first place or what the errors
mean for that matter.

Does microsoft have a program that will automatically fix
system errors? If not, how do I go about eliminating the
errors, short of doing a complete recovery of my system
or paying high $ to purhchase software that will fix the
errors.

.
Try the system file checker tool. Click start, run, and
type in this here; "sfc /scannow" with that space after
the sfc. It will ask for your XP CD to copy any needed
files from, and it runs as "windows file protection". This
may also be caused by a virus or worm, so update and run a
full virus scan.

Norton SystemWorks is an excellent anti-virus program (which you must have) but includes utilities that watch for and repair problems to your system. When I first loaded it at home and at work, I had 300+ various problems it dealt with! Has many other features too and I make use of them all. Sells for around $80 if I remember correctly. Ordered it on-line and had it in 3 days.
