Since upgrading to XP, the computer always does a system
file check when it first boots up.
Does anyone have any reasons why XP is doing this all the
time, and is there any way of reducing the number of times
it does this.
Also, the computer will not automatically turn off,
although my motherboard & bios has been set for it to do
this. The computer just reboots itself. The only way I can
turn it off is to hold the power switch in when
the 'windows is shutting down'prompt appears.

Go to run,type:cmd then type:CHKDSK /
This turns off auto run, however with the othe problem you must have
conflict (usually hardware) in the computer.Try the newer post with cd creator an
shutdown,5 or 6 lines after youre post.
