We have a PC that was updated with Express Pack 1 for XP. When it tried to boot up after the update we get the message that C:\Windows\system32\config\system is missing or corrupt. Has this happened to anyone else and how is it resolved? We really would like to avoid reinstalling the whole operating system if possible. I have not been able to successfully repair it with the CD.

On updating, did you notice if the update would not be able to uninstall? If it can be uninstalled, you will need to know what the code for the update is. It will be something like KB......................, or C..................... If you don't remember or know, then go back to UPDATE on the web and look at your update download history to get the #. Then go to My Computer, click on Adding/Removing programs. If it is unloadable, then you will see the number. Click on it to uninstall and reboot. Hope this works for you. I know how you feel about reloading Windows from scratch. It hurts!
