I am working with Windows XP and my system keeps restarting. I have
downloaded the boot disk and am able to get the system to 3 options: 1 put in
XP disk, 2, use recovery console and 3 quit. I tried using the recovery
console but I do not have the windows xp cd (my system came preloaded). how
do I bypass this? can I copy the kernel file from another system and use the
recovery console and specify the location to read from or can I use a
different version of windows xp (i.e professional or office) to obtain this
file that is damaged Please help

Well, I presume it restart in Windows?

Right click on My Computer and select properties.
Click Advanced tab.
Click Settings under Startup and Recovery.
Under System Failure uncheck Automatically Restart.
Click OK.

This won't cure your problem, as instead of restarting you'll likely get a
Blue Screen of Death (BSOD). But it will hopefully give you an error which
you can use to trace the cause of the problem.

I had this once and it was a faulty driver on my CDRW. A friend found his
was caused by a USB device. If you need more help drop me a line.

I can not get windows to come up. It will start loading and the windows xp
screen will appear with the loading bar in green going across the screen,
then it goes to black then you hear the system restart. Now I have downloaded
the boot disk and can get it to a screen with the 3 options described below.
I was actually able to get into the recovery console. I have the option to
obtain the kernel.dll file from another xp system but i do not know how to
specify it to read from the a drive. in the instruction from microsoft, it
specifies to type cd system32 and the to ren kernel.dll (etc) Can you help on
this and is it possible to use the file from another system

I have to say it sounds like a virus or Spyware. Can you boot in safe mode
(pressing F5 whilsts it boots?) and then run a virus program?

I can't see why you cant replace it (just take a copy of the original
incase). You need to (in dos)
type: cd windows
cd system32

the kernall file is in there.

I do not think this a virus issue. I have had a virus on another machine in
the past that would continously reboot when you were on the web but not when
I am trying to bring up the windows xp. I have tried to restart in the safe
mode, nothing. I have tried to restart using the last known good
confirguration, nothing. All it does is reboot. You stated to take the copy
from the dos mode. If I do this and copy from another system, in the recovery
console, how will I specify to the system where to look for the data from if
I am using the floppy drive. It stated to type cd system 32 ( which is
changing directory to system 32, right) and then it states to ren the
kernal.dll file with the copy but it does not allow you to specify the drive.
It is only reading from the cd at this point.
